Endemol was formed when two competing Dutch media moguls came together in 1994 to form a television production company. The name is a mash-up of Joop van den Ende and John de Mol’s surnames. Their biggest early hit was the Big Brother reality show which was eventually exported to 25 countries, including the UK and America. A string of popular game shows followed and Endemol became the world’s largest independent production company.
